ПРЕССА:
Viktor Gordiouk, who figures to be one of the few new faces on the Buffalo
Sabres' roster, may hold the key to the team's line combinations for the
start of the regular season.
Gordiouk came to the Sabres two years ago in the Eastern European invasion
of the team. That was the same season that goaltender Dominik Hasek, defenseman
Richard Smehlik and winger Yuri Khmylev joined the team. All three have
had an impact. Now it may be Gordiouk's turn.
The 24-year-old Russian-born winger scored a pair of goals and added
an assist on Pat LaFontaine's goal in an 8-3 victory over Toronto Friday
night and was in the lineup again Saturday night in his team's 7-3 loss
to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the preseason finale in Charleston, S.C.
Gordiouk started Friday's game on the No. 1 line with LaFontaine and
Alexander Mogilny. He also played with them on the power play.
Lining up with two of the NHL's most dynamic scorers was a pleasure,
Gordiouk said.
"It was a lot of fun because they are great players," said Gordiouk,
who has been somewhat overlooked in the preseason by those trying to dope
out how the Sabres roster will shape up.
One reason Sabres coach John Muckler put Gordiouk with LaFontaine and
Mogilny was to look at the trio as a possible line combination. Another
was to give Gordiouk a chance to show off his skills.
"We want to give him a chance to make the team. He played very well
in this game," Muckler said of his performance Friday. "He certainly put
himself in a position to make the team."
Gordiouk began the 1992-93 season with the Sabres, playing in 16 games
before he was shipped to Rochester, where his season was spoiled by a leg
injury. Last season, he scored 28 goals and registered 39 assists in 74
games with the Amerks.
"He's an offensive player. He's a talented player," Muckler said of
Gordiouk, who was playing in the Elite League in the Soviet Union when
he was only 18.
"When he first came over, he really never knew the North American game,
and positionally really didn't play it very well," Muckler said. "He seems
to be improved in that area. If he can take the knocks and be willing to
play in traffic, he may stay here."
Gordiouk's chances of starting the season in the NHL look promising,
but he is trying not to get ahead of himself.
"I just play when they give me a chance in the exhibition games," Gordiouk
said.
He knows that if he is to play on a line with LaFontaine and Mogilny,
or any line, he will have to do more than score goals.
"Forecheck, backcheck, body check, stuff like that," he said.
On Friday night, Muckler's other combinations were Brad May at left
wing and Jason Dawe at right wing on Dale Hawerchuk's line and Khmylev
at right wing with Craig Simpson at left wing on a line centered by Derek
Plante.
Hawerchuk's playmaking could unlock the scoring of both of the young
wingers, May and Dawe.
There's scoring potential on the wings on the other line with Plante
supplying great speed in the middle.
Muckler conceded that those combinations could endure for a while. The
key is Gordiouk.
"If Gordiouk can play on the left side (with LaFontaine), he frees a
left winger (May, Simpson or Khmylev) to play on our second or third line,"
said the coach. "It gives us a little more depth if that can happen. I
don't know whether it can happen."
That still leaves a goal scorer in Donald Audette, a hustler in Rob
Ray and four versatile veterans -- Randy Wood, Dave Hannan, Wayne Presley
and Bob Sweeney.
"We have some competition from within," said Muckler, obviously enjoying
that prospect.
The Sabres could lose one of their spare forwards Wednesday in the NHL
waiver draft. The team can protect 18 skaters and two goaltenders. Other
players with limited pro experience are exempt from the waiver draft.
"We probably will have to expose an established player," Muckler said.
"We possibly could lose one player that we don't want to lose."
The Sabres closed their preseason Saturday night with a 7-3 loss to
the Tampa Bay Lightning before a crowd of 7,939 at Charleston, S.C. The
Sabres finished the exhibition schedule 2-4-1 and are scheduled to open
the regular season at Quebec Saturday night.
The Sabres got goals from Alexander Mogilny, Yuri Khmylev and Brad May.
Dale Hawerchuk assisted on all three goals. |
